Feb 14, 2020 · Stick Welding Beads. Stick welds can have multiple bead characteristics. The low hydrogen family of rods are quite versatile. A 7018 low hydrogen rod can be dragged as a straight bead. These are known as “stringer” beads because they are even and narrow. This is popular with flat, horizontal, and overhead stick welding. occurs when successive weld beads overlap previous weld beads by 30 to 70%. This is most easily done by having the welder run a stringer bead or a small weave with the electrode pointed at the toe of the previously deposited weld bead. It is also important to make the beads consistently uniform in thickness and width to optimize the effectiveness

Stringer VS Weave » Welding Classroom

Stringer VS Weave Weave VS Stringers VS manipulating the electrode (My opinion) When I weld in the vertical position with GMAW or FCAW I have to manipulate the electrode. Even if I am making a 3/16" fillet. This manipulation reduces the convexity of the bead by spreading the heat out from the arc and depositing metal over a less concentrated area.

Dec 28, 2005 · With that said, my opinion is as follows; Stringer beads have their place, when heat input is a concern (stainless..), ultimate strength (alloys..) and absolute minimum slag inclusions (x-ray quality) are needed a stringer bead may be called for. Even with all of those concerns I will still weave at least a little to flatten out the weld.
